Knights ARE men and women who live under a code of chivalry. Long
ago Knights took an oath to protect the distressed, to champion a cause, to fiercely protect the land of their birth, to give generously to everyone, to uphold the right and to live an honorable life. In the Middle Ages, orders of chivalry and orders of knighthood were essentially the same. Knights and philosophers developed lists of virtues that they defined as chivalrous.
However, there was no one uniform code of chivalry. For example, King Arthur gave his Knights the charge of patience, humility and meekness. They were never to be cruel or to go into battle because of a bad quarrel or to seize someone else's goods. They were to be courteous and merciful to those who asked for mercy. They were to defend right against might and protect distress. They were charged to defend the knighthood and treat other Knights as they would treat themselves.
Knights, being human, will sometimes fail in their endeavors. But it is the striving for virtue and doing what is right that defines the office of Knighthood. As humans, we continuously seek for the good, wanting to believe, needing to believe that it still exists.
